“Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest. And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. John 4:35-36”.
In the scriptural passage above, the Lord Jesus Christ was in essence telling His disciples, “The work of harvesting of souls does not have to start in four months’ time. Look around you, vast fields is ripening everywhere ready for harvest”.
This He said in view of the great numbers of the Samaritans who would believe in Him and thus, be harvested or brought to eternal life, as a result of the testimony of the woman He met at Jacob’s well at Sychar.
What He said to His disciples who were present in this occasion, He is saying to you and I today- the great harvest of souls is ripe and waiting for harvest. Great numbers of people are waiting to be brought to eternal life. The time to put in the sickle is now
MILLIONS OF SOULS ARE READY AND WAITING FOR HARVEST.
The United Nations says we have 7 billion people in the world today.
33% are Christians
22% are Muslims
14% are Hindus
7% are Buddhists
12% are people who practice other religions
12% are people who would not be aligned with a religion.
Meaning that out of the world’s population of 7 billion, only 2.31 billion are Christians. What happens to the balance of 4.69 billion? Hear this: about 20% of the world’s population is yet to hear the gospel of the Lord Jesus. Out of about 332,000 Christian missionaries spread all over the world, only about 4,000 of them are working among the unreached people. 1,739 people groups are yet to be reached all over the world. 590 are Africans, 40 are Nigerians.
Among the ten most unreached people group in Nigeria, there is no known Christian among seven of them. Among the Bassa people spread across Kogi, Nassarawa and Benue states in Nigeria,
• We have 187 villages in all
• 147 of them have churches
• 68 of the villages with churches have no pastor in charge.
• 40 of these villages have no church at all. (Courtesy of Igala, Bassa and Idoma Missions summit –IBIMIS)
Even right there in denominations spread all over the world, do you know that some are yet to hear the gospel of the Lord Jesus? In 2007, a young man came to do a job for me at home. I asked him whether or not he has experienced the saving grace of God in Christ Jesus. Hear him “Yes, I am saved in Christ. Formerly, I could not feed myself but was invited to church, did deliverance and now, at any time, I have at least two thousand naira [Nigerian currency] in my pocket. I am saved”. But is that salvation in Christ Jesus?
People are trooping to hell in their millions and the church is sleeping and feasting away in the dark. Revelation 3:14-17. We feel relaxed, unconcerned- no wet eyes, no bent knees to God in prayers that He will please send laborers into His harvest. Mathew 9:37-38. I guess many of us Christians are suffering from one or all of the under listed:
• Our hearts have been seared
• We have lost our first love
• We never have encountered the Lord Jesus
• We don’t know the value of a soul.
• We have been diverted from eternal to temporary and mundane things.
It has become a case of Christ being wounded right there in the house of His friends. Zachariah 13:6. God depends on you for this great harvest of souls but are you not fast asleep snoring away the destiny and eternity of men? If you will not allow God to do something with you and through you, don’t you think that He will have to do something without you? If you refuse to work with God to salvage eternal souls from Satan and hell, then, do you consider it out of place for God to spue you out of His mouth? Revelation 3:14-16
Don’t allows God to bypass you like Eliab Saying, “I have rejected him” Respond to millions of people crying out their hearts to God day and night, “O God, when will you send somebody to me to explain how to be free from sin and the powers of darkness?”
THE WORK IS URGENT!
In our Text, Jesus said in verse 35, “…Vast fields are ripening all around us and are ready NOW, for the harvest” meaning that the work is to be done now- urgently! We are told that about 83 people die all over the world every second. How many of them are saved in Christ Jesus?
In John chapter 9 and verse 4, Jesus said, “I must work the works of him that sent me while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work”. The Lord said, “I must …”-when it is convenient and when it is absolutely inconvenient, in season, and out of season. Apostle Paul put it this way “— necessity is laid upon me: yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!” I Corinthians 9:16. That is how we should approach the work of preaching the gospel of the Lord Jesus today.
Jesus the Lord did the works of Him who sent Him. Permit me to ask you, “That thing you are doing, who sent or commanded you to do it? Who commissioned you to do it? God or your stomach? Some are actually called of God but sent by their belly. In Luke 22:35, Jesus said, “when I sent you…” not when you were sent because somebody else might as well send them.
The work has to be done while it is day for the night comes when no man can work. The night is when man would want to work, is willing to work, is ready to work but the ability, the time and the energy to do that are no longer there. Stop procrastinating! Stop dodging the work! Don’t be guilty of refusing to blow the trumpet to the hearing of millions who have mortgaged their eternity for a plate of pottage.
